Gare Yi
Gare Yi means “The Stations” in Wolof. Massow Ka follows the railway that once linked Dakar and Saint-Louis and photographs ten old stations: Saint-Louis, Mpal, Louga, Kébémer, Ndande, Kelle, Tivaouane, Thiès, Tamba in eastern Senegal, and Bamako. He plans to go on to the line’s fifteen other stations. These are places residents made their own and then lost, and the train may wake them again if the promise of a new railway is kept. Not the Saint-Louis terminus, though: the series begins there, and it seems unlikely ever to reopen, while the renovated station in Dakar answers it with some irony. For Ka the project is political: it is about letting people move freely within their own country again.
