In photography, I am attracted to the quieter moments, moments that will not make it to the mainstream media. I am drawn to the enduring spirit of human beings.
Andrew Tshabangu was born in 1966 in Soweto and lives and works in Johannesburg. He studied at the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism and the Alexandra Community Art Centre, and has taught at the Market Photo Workshop since 1998. His work has been shown across South Africa and abroad, including the Bamako Encounters, the Dakar Biennale and MAXXI in Rome. His retrospective Footprints (2017–2019) travelled from the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown to the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town. His latest solo show, Communion, was at Gallery MOMO in Johannesburg (2025). His work is held by the Johannesburg Art Gallery, Iziko Museums, the Standard Bank collection and the Dokolo Foundation, among others.
