Van Andrea
Van Andrea is a painter and sculptor from the Republic of the Congo and a graduate of the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Brazzaville. His first exhibition, Fumée sans feu, opened at Les Ateliers Sahm in Brazzaville in 2013. He went on to win first prize at the second RIAC (Rencontre Internationale d’Art Contemporain) in Brazzaville, which came with a residency at the Fondation Blachère in France, and had his first solo show abroad at Gastateliers Krone in Aarau, Switzerland. In 2018, at a group show in Pointe-Noire, he presented Sony m’a rendu fou, a tribute to the Congolese writer Sony Labou Tansi. Since 2019 he has reworked masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance around one theme: the corruption of morals. Ankara fabric collaged into his women’s headscarves is his signature, and their carefully tied hairstyles recall his admiration for his grandmother. His work has been shown by Galerie Art Brazza (2021, 2022) and at the AfCFTA Marketplace in Egypt (2023).
